I always knew I would like to see a living legend in real life. Up until yesterday I thought it would probably be Eric Clapton, but it turned out to be Wolf Kahn. I had the opportunity to hear him speak and do a demo for the Pastel Society of NJ.
This is what I heard him say...
I am against expertise.
I am against order.
I am in favor of disorder.
Order should be barely sensed through screen...
The importance of chaos...
Convention puts fences around you...
Art should be serious play...
Escape from constraint...
Be in love with chaos.
Manage to catch something on the fly.
Magic of empathy let Colors speak to you.
Art insists on freedom, physical and emotional.
Every thing that you know keeps you from catching things on the fly.
Look at the art of children
Innocence of spirit
You are meant to show the world an image that hasn't been seen before.
Artist are supposed to make connections.
Color has very few symbols attached to it.
Context affects the meaning and use of color.
Art is a thing of particulars.
At the time of Rembrandt all foliage was brown, the Impressionist began using green.
You have to invent color.
Everyone knows grass is green. Until you add pink .
Artist needs to get beyond description.
An artist thinks with a brush in his hand.... Corot
If you cease to search and starting to perform.
Exhibit an element of the non routine.
In all seriousness, Wolf Kahn is to Pastel what Clapton is to the guitar so I wasn't that far off.
