Every now and then I loose my way. I have a few bad days in the studio where nothing comes together. After cleaning and reorganizing I try to use play to navigate through these slumps. I take out some sparkly watercolors or my box of collage materials and give my brain a break. I also use writing to push myself through creative slumps. For example, I like to make lists. My list of Fifty Words that Describe my Art has been very helpful. When I review my list, it reminds me what I am about and helps me focus. Sometimes I edit it when I feel stuck-deleting what I have out grown, adding new adjectives or selecting something to focus on.
In a slump? Start a list of your own. You don’t have to come up with 50 words at once, just keep it handy and add a few at a time.
